the everyman has been hi-jacked. i don't know how to prevent it or for that matter even slow it. as the reputation of this contest has grown, more and more non-accidental photographers have come to the table. this is not an entirely bad development but it has taken attention away from many of the images this contest is meant to showcase.

seeing another years group of photos get buried beneath a heap of more qualified, skilled and practiced photographers has discouraged me. having been raised an only child and accustomed to getting my way i've concluded the only way i can go to bed smiling about the everyman and knowing the images i want to acknowledge are getting acknowledged is to make my own category with photographs selected only by me, your host, troy.

that is what this award is about. i call it, quite un-creatively, the everyman spirit award and each photo showcased here will win $100, double the award for a first place ranking in the other categories.

the below photos share a basic essence i feel best emulates the spirit of what the everyman is after. compelling images shot by average folk at the right moment and place in time. kudos to them, those who came before them (i should have done this long ago) and those who will follow. i look forward to seeing your work.

check out the other everyman spirit winners: 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 | 2015 .
